Inequities in facility delivery
Cleaning complete – (for now at least)! This week was spent on data analysis and in particular getting estimates of the total number of facility births, post-natal visits and skilled attendant deliveries reported in the DHIS2 for every region. In addition to summaries aggregated by region, the analyses are also conducted by type of facility because there is a large difference in service delivery depending on the type of facility (i.e hospitals vs health centers).

I prepared a brief summarizing my findings, highlighting surprising patterns I noticed for further discussion. The goal of the project is to understand the association between neonatal mortality and the coverage of key indicators that determine neonatal mortality. Institutional delivery is one of the most important factors. In Ethiopia, that means delivery in health centers and hospitals. However, in my analysis I noted that in some regions, deliveries were also happening in health posts. Health posts are the often the first and closest point of contact with the health care system for majority of the population, especially in rural areas. This presents a challenge as health posts are not sufficiently equipped for delivery and even less so on how to navigate deliveries with unprecedented complications. Research at the sub-national level can shed light on areas that are particularly under-resourced and in-turn help guide impactful policy making in order to alleviate troubles women and infants face in those areas. Though it is still early on, preliminary results do reveal these inequities and instill a sense of urgency of the research at hand.
Cultural experiences
Getting the opportunity to visit Arba Minch in South Ethiopia was also a highlight of my experience. Stepping away from the bustling capital city of Addis Ababa and into a different region of the country has definitely broadened my experiences and perspectives on the economic, geographic and cultural diversity of the country.
